Summer Pool Safety – Part 1
As we leave winter further and further behind us, we’re all looking forward to bright days in the sun grilling, playing, and swimming. However, summer isn’t all fun and games. Though winter brings risks of cold, slips, and falls, summer is home to a majority of the injuries we can suffer throughout the year. That is because everybody’s getting outside, working out again, and enjoying activities like waterskiing that can lead to injury. Nobody wants to be injured halfway through the best time of the year! Getting the most out of summer is easier when you know how to be safe.
The pool is at the heart of summer for many people, and for good reason. You get to cool off immediately and enjoy slides, diving boards, and more. The pool isn’t just fun, it’s relaxing, and when you leave, you have an overall feeling of wellness you won’t get anywhere else. However, the pool isn’t without its dangers. Besides the obvious drowning risks, there is the danger of slipping and falling. Wet pool decks are responsible for all kinds of injuries, and keeping yours grippy and solid will make a big difference. The team at SlipTech proudly offers anti-slip floor coatings that will not only keep you steady on your feet, but will do their job for years without breaking down.
In today’s blog, we want to share some of the ways that you can ensure your pool is a truly carefree location!
Summer Pool Safety
You shouldn’t have to worry when you, your friends, or your loved ones are enjoying some time at the pool, especially if it is your own. Here are some things you can do to make your pool safe!
- Mark the depths of your pool very clearly. Don’t be afraid to be on-the-nose about how deep your water is. If you have a pool that slopes downward, include a safety float to ensure nobody gets stuck out of their depth.
- Train children to float and swim. Few people love the pool as much as little kids. However, the pool can be very dangerous for them. Making sure your little ones know how to swim isn’t optional, so equip them to handle the water as soon as you can.
- Ensure correct depth. If you have a slide or diving board incorporated in your pool, you’re sure to be the coolest person on your block. Make sure it stays that way by consulting with a professional contractor to ensure your pool is deep enough for these favorite pool additions. Most importantly, check with us about non-slip coatings for your diving board and any stairs to the water slide!
- Always have rescue devices on-hand. A backyard pool is still a pool, and you need to equip it in the case of emergency. Remember, luck favors the prepared! Keep lifesavers and other rescue tools close at hand. Include a first-aid kit to give yourself a better chance of being able to handle any emergency.
- Never let anyone swim alone. And to follow that, you shouldn’t swim alone, either. Though a bit of solitude in the pool can be wonderful, pools are not supposed to be enjoyed alone, mostly because they can turn dangerous when you least expect it. You do not want to be alone if something goes wrong, and you don’t want that to happen for your loved ones, either. Additionally, if you have little ones who want to go swimming, sending them out with an older sibling isn’t a great idea. Make sure there is always a competent swimming around who can take action if needed.
- Fence the pool off. The pool presents possible danger at all time, and as a pool owner, it is your responsibility to fence it off so that people don’t feel they can just run in and swim. You also don’t want little ones to wander in on their own. We recommend you install a fence that is at least six feet high and ensure that trees, bushes, and other features aren’t so close that people can use them to get over the fence.
